SSU men's basketball: Scott headlines recruiting class

Patrick Scott, a 6-foot-3 guard from Bear River High in Grass Valley and one of Sonoma State's most heavily recruited players in years, headlines the Seawolves' incoming four-person recruiting class.

Scott will be joined by 6-7 forward Steve Lackey from Ponderosa High in Shingle Springs, 6-4 guard James McLaughlin from Douglas High in Minden, Nev., and 6-4 guard Jason Walter, who played at Spring Valley High in Las Vegas.

SSU coach Pat Fuscaldo says Scott and Lackey have the potential to start, or play significant minutes, as freshmen. The Seawolves could also return highly touted sophomore point guard Ashley Arnott, who missed last season with a back injury suffered in an exhibition game.
SSU, which went 12-16 last year, will also return its top three scorers from its 2008-09 campaign.

"If everyone is healthy, we are going to better than we were last year," Fuscaldo said.

Scott, a Sacramento all-metro selection as a senior, averaged 25.7 points a game and was Bear River's all-time leading scorer with 1,676 points. Fuscaldo envisions Scott also being able to post up and present matchup problems.

"He's a rebounding machine for his size," Fuscaldo said.

Lackey averaged 18.0 points as a senior, was the MVP of the Sierra Valley Conference and was a Sacramento all-metro pick. Fuscaldo is impressed by Lackey's understanding of the game.

"He has great skills for a post player," he said. "He has great hands and he shoots it well."

The 220-pound McLaughlin was a first-team all-league selection and all-Northern Region pick as a junior. He suffered a broken fibula during his senior season and could redshirt as a freshman.

Walter played this past season at the Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas, a yearlong program designed help borderline prospects earn college scholarships.

Walter was his school's career scoring and assists leader and was a three-time all-league selection.

Junior College swimmer
David Hernandez has been named the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year by the
National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators.

The prestigious award, in its 17th year, is given
to the male and female student athlete who best demonstrates outstanding
accomplishment and leadership in academics, athletics and citizenship.

Hernandez, a sophomore kinesiology major who had a 4.0 GPA,
was the captain of the Bear Cubs swim team which finished second in the state
this past season. He was a first-team All-American in the 100- and 200-yard
butterfly, the 200 medley and the 200 free and 400 medley relays. He ranks
second on SRJC's career list in the 100 butterfly and ninth in the 50 free.

Despite his accomplishments, Hernandez, who was told by SRJC
swim coach Jill McCormick that he would be SRJC's nominee for the award, said
he was stunned to receive the honor.

"When Jill told me I was like, 'OK, go ahead,'" Hernandez
said. "But I had no idea I would actually be even close to winning it."

Hernandez will be honored during the NATYCAA's convention in
Orlando, Fla.,

in the fall. He was a Doyle Scholarship recipient, earned a Commitment to
Excellence award in each of his four semesters at SRJC and was recognized by
the Santa Rosa East Rotary Club as its 2009 Outstanding Student award winner.

Hernandez said he managed to get about a 3.6 GPA in high
school, grades he earned without putting in too much effort. At SRJC, he said
he learned about the value of hard work - in the pool and in the classroom.

"I think I realized if I wanted to do something with my life
I was going to have to work hard," Hernandez said. "I wouldn't say I was the
smartest person at the JC, but I have worked really hard."
