University of San Diego junior right-hander Matt Thomson (El Molino) was drafted in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Wednesday by the Detroit Tigers.
Thomson, who played his freshman year at Santa Rosa Junior College, went 5-5 with a 5.98 ERA this past season at USD. Professional scouts are attracted by Thompson's fastball, which consistently hovers around 92-93 mph. Thomson was drafted in the 22nd round by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2007 MLB Draft.
Thomson will play this summer with the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California Collegiate League. A math major with a 3.2 GPA at USD, Thomson said he is uncertain whether he will sign a professional contract or return to school.
